Masturbation
The term masturbation comes from from the Latin words manstuprare, from manus "hand" (as in manual) + stuprare "defile" (oneself), from stuprum "defilement, dishonor," related to stupere "to be stunned, stupefied" (as in stupid). [Quoted from The Online Etymology Dictionary].
Masturbation refers to any act of sexual self-stimulation. Throughout the history of all religions it has been condemened and vilified, until recent decades. The reasons for this can be seen by studying the following articles.

The Sin of Wasting Sperm 1) It is forbidden to emit sperm to waste [i.e. to fornicate], and this sin is greater than any other sin of the Torah.
