Masturbation
Masturbation

The term masturbation comes from from the Latin words manstuprare, from manus "hand" (as in manual) + stuprare "defile" (oneself), from stuprum "defilement, dishonor," related to stupere "to be stunned, stupefied" (as in stupid). [Quoted from The Online Etymology Dictionary].
Masturbation refers to any act of sexual self-stimulation. Throughout the history of all religions it has been condemened and vilified, until recent decades. The reasons for this can be seen by studying the following articles.
Even Haezer Siman: Wasting Sperm
The Sin of Wasting Sperm 1) It is forbidden to emit sperm to waste [i.e. to fornicate], and this sin is greater than any other sin of the Torah. Thereby a man may not perform the spilling of the sperm outside the womb [or anywhere else], nor may he may he marry a girl too young to have children. 3) It is forbidden for a man to cause self-erection [masturbation] or to think erotic thoughts [fantasy]. If such thoughts do come to him he should discard them for thoughts of the Torah, since the Torah is liken to a “beloved hind, inspiring favour.” Thus it is forbidden for a man to sleep flat on his back, but he should turn slightly to one side to prevent him having an erection. He must not look at male and female animals [pornography] or birds [thoughts] that are copulating. Quoted from Even Haezer Siman 23.
Kellogg: For Boys
Yes, this was written by that Kellogg - Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (1852-1943) in 1877. You can read more about him here. This chapter is from his famous book Plain Facts for Old and Young. Boys, this chapter is for you. It is written and printed expressly for you. The author does not care very much if a single page is not read by grown men, but is very solicitous that every boy shall read each line thoughtfully and carefully, weighing well the facts presented, and the words of warning offered. You may find nothing to laugh at, nothing pleasing; but you will find something to think about, something worth pondering and remembering. Genuine Boys Real boys are scarce now-a-days. In the days of Methuselah, male human beings were still boys when nearly a century old; twenty-five years ago, boys were still such until well out of their "teens," now, the interval between infancy and the age at which the boy becomes a young man is so brief that boyhood...
Kellogg: Masturbation
If illicit commerce of the sexes is a heinous sin, self-pollution, or masturbation, is a crime doubly abominable. As a sin against nature, it has no parallel except in sodomy (see Gen. 19:5; Judges 19:22). It is the most dangerous of all sexual abuses because the most extensively practiced. The vice consists in an excitement of the genital organs produced otherwise than in the natural way. It is known by the terms, self-pollution, self-abuse, masturbation, onanism, manustupration, voluntary pollution, and solitary or secret vice. The vice is the more extensive because there are almost no bounds to its indulgence. Its frequent repetition fastens it upon the victim with a fascination almost irresistible! It may be begun in earliest infancy, and may continue through life. Even though no warning may have been given, the transgressor seems to know, instinctively, that he is committing a great wrong, for he carefully hides his practice from observation. In solitude he pollutes himself, and with his...
Kellogg: Results of Masturbation
The physician rarely meets more forlorn objects than the victims of prolonged self-abuse. These unfortunate beings he meets every day of his life, and listens so often to the same story of shameful abuse and retributive suffering, that he dreads to hear it repeated. In these cases, there is usually a horrid sameness -- the same cause, the same inevitable results. In most cases, the patient need not utter a word; for the physician can read in his countenance his whole history, as can most other people at all conversant with the subject. In order to secure the greatest completeness consistent with necessary brevity, we will describe the effects observed in males and those in females under separate heads, noticing the symptoms of each morbid condition in connection with its description. Effects in Males We shall describe, first, the local effects, then the general effects, physical and mental. Local Effects Excitement of the genital organs produces the most intense...
Leviticus 15: Orgasm
Editor's Note: The following is excerpted from the instructions given by Moses to initiates of his tradition, upon which are based Judaism and Christianity. Careful examination of the translation made of the Hebrew text into Latin reveals many interesting details long since forgotten by the established religions. We provide for your consideration a translation made from Hebrew, and then the Latin / English. It is important to note that most modern religious groups disregard these passages and claim a variety of justifications for their point of view. Christians in particular often claim that Jesus brought a new covenant, yet they ignore his words about his teachings: "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be...

Masturbation
Since the Christian tradition emerged from Judaism, it is advisable to read the relevant articles on this topic from that tradition. The Bible is nonetheless quite clear about masturbation, although the word itself does not appear in the scripture. Consider these verses: And if a man has an emission of semen, he shall bathe his whole body in water, and be unclean until the evening. And every garment and every skin on which the semen comes shall be washed with water, and be unclean until the evening. - Leviticus 15 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in...
Masturbation: Still Secret After All These Years
There are abundant articles, books, websites, and other resources recommending masturbation to teens and adults. Experts line up to support masturbation. Then, why are so many people still uncomfortable with the notion? Why do so many feel guilt and shame about masturbating? Why is masturbation kept so secret, if the “experts” say it is “ok”? Perhaps it is because in your heart you already know it is wrong, but cannot figure out the reason. Guilt and Shame It is likely that many of the people who search the internet for "masturbation" are trying to resolve the conflicting feelings that have about the act. In spite of the advice of parents, teachers, doctors, and even priests, that nagging feeling of guilt (which makes people keep the act secret) won't go away, and even after masturbating, there is a feeling of shame or remorse, often accompanied by a resolve to never repeat the act. Then, the next day the desire arises again, and the conflict with it. What to...
Sex and Teenagers
The moment to abandon in a definitive manner the false shame and prejudices related to the sexual issue has arrived. Yes, it is necessary to comprehend in a clear and precise manner the sexual problems of the adolescents of both sexes. The sexual energy appears and flows in an overwhelming manner through the neurosympathetic system of the adolescent organism at about fourteen years of age; here, this special type of energy transforms the human organism by modifying the voice in the male and originating the ovarian function in the female. The human organism—as an authentic factory—transforms dense or crude elements into refined vital substances. The foods that we ingest into our stomach pass through multiple transformations and refinements, culminating in...
Sivananda: Effects of Sexual Indulgence
The most devitalising and demoralizing of pleasures is the sex pleasure. Sensual enjoyment is attended with various defects. It is attended with various sorts of sins, pains, weaknesses, attachments, slave mentality, weak will, severe exertion and struggle, craving and mental restlessness. Worldly persons never come to their proper senses although they get severe knocks, kicks and blows from different corners. The strolling street dog never stops from visiting the houses even though it is pelted with stones every time. Eminent doctors of the West say that various kinds of diseases arise from the loss of semen, particularly in young age. There appear boils on the body, acne or eruptions on the face, blue lines around the eyes, absence of beard, sunken eyes, pale face with anaemia, loss of memory, loss of eye-sight, shortsightedness, discharge of semen along with urine, enlargement of the...
Sivananda: The Value of Semen
My dear brothers! The vital energy, the Virya [strength; power; energy; courage] that supports your life, which is the Prana of Pranas, which shines in your sparkling eyes, which beams in your shining cheeks, is a great treasure for you. Remember this point well. Virya is the quintessence of blood. One drop of semen is manufactured out of forty drops of blood. Mark here how valuable this fluid is! A tree draws the essence or Rasa from the earth. This essence is circulated throughout the tree, its twigs, branches, leaves, flowers and fruits. The shining colours and life in the leaves, flowers and fruits are due to this Rasa. Similarly, the Virya that is manufactured by the cells of the testes out of blood gives colour and vitality to the human body and its different organs. According to

Talmud: Emission, Masturbation
Rabbi Johanan stated: Whosoever emits semen in vain deserves death, for it is said in Scripture, "And the thing which he [Onan] did [spilling his semen on the ground] was evil in the sight of the Lord, and He slew him also." [Gen. 38:9] Rabbi Isaac and Rabbi Ammi said. He is as though he shed blood, for it is said in Scripture, "Ye that inflame yourselves among the terebinths, under every leafy tree, that slay the children in the valleys under the clefts of the rocks;" read not 'that slay' but 'that press out'. [...] Rab stated: 'A man who wilfully causes erection should be placed under the ban'. But why did he not say, 'This is forbidden'? Because the man merely incites his evil inclination against himself. R. Ammi, however, stated: He is called a renegade, because such is the art of the evil inclination: To-day it incites man to do one wrong thing, and to-morrow it...
Zohar: Looking at Beauty
We learned that the beauty of Adam came from the glow of the supernal knot of the brightness that shines, being the secret of the glow of Aba, since he had a Neshamah of the Neshamah of Aba of Atzilut. The beauty of Eve was such that no creature could look at her, since her Neshamah of Neshamah of Ima of Atzilut. Even Adam did not look at her until the time they sinned and their beauty was removed. Only then could Adam look at her and recognize her for the purpose of mating. This is the essence of the verse, "And Adam knew his wife again" (Genesis 4:25). He knew her in everything; he knew her through mating, that is, "knew," in that he recognized her and saw her. We learned that is it prohibited for a man to look at the beauty of a woman to prevent him from acquiring bad thoughts and being torn into...
Zohar: Orgasm and Defilement
393. “And Hashem saw that the wickedness of man was very great upon the earth, and the thought in man’s heart was continuously only evil” (Genesis / Beresheet 6:5). Of the verse, “For you are not El who pleasures in wickedness. Evil will not sojourn with you” (Tehilim 5:5), Rabbi Yehuda said: This verse has been discussed and explained, yet come and behold: he who cleaves to and is led by the evil inclination is defiled and will be led further into defilement, as we have learned. 394. “The wickedness of man was very great,” because men committed all sorts of sins and their guilt was not complete until they spilled blood in vain upon the ground. This refers to those who pollute their ways upon the earth, that is, they spill their sperm in vain. Thus, it was written: “Only evil (ra) all day.” In another place it is written: “And Er, the son of Yehuda, was evil (ra) in the eyes of Hashem” (Beresheet 38:7), because he spilled his seed upon the earth. this indicates that the word Ra refers to the...
